Six monthly heartgard shotQ: I wonder if i could get some advice. i have three dogs and they have been on heartgard all their lives. however, last time i went to the vet they suggested the six montly shot, which i went with. however a colleague told me that the shot was not safe and that they are trying to ban its use. do you know anything about this. many thanks in advance for any advice. A: We can only tell you that there have been some negative reports on the internet. in addition, if you use heartgard plus, you also gain protection against intestinal worms.

ScratchingQ: Can constant scratching indicate fleas or ticks and what do they look like? where do they come from? A: Constant scratching can be sign of flea bite allergy, other types of allergies or possibly skin parasites or mange. take to vet to sort out

DogsQ: I have a mixed lab who insists on licking the top of her paw until it is raw, my vet gave me a spray that is suppose to be bitter, but it's not working she has been doing this for six months please help! A: Need to treat internally. likely allergy or nervous habit. ask vet for oral script for amitryptylline which often helps these
HeatQ: I have a 14 mth old female siamese cat..she still has not gone into heat. is this normal and how long could it take before she does..could there be something wrong.. A: Tough to say. some cats have mild silent heats which you might not detect. cats do not bleed or swell up like dogs. their heats are more behavioral and can in some cases go undetectec by owner
Dose?Q: To whom it may concern: i just returned from the vet, and my dog received metronidazole 250 mg. the bottle lists the medication as mrx waltham canine low fat. my first question is: are these two names the same medication. 2nd: if this is metronidazole, what would be the dose per day to give my dog, who weighs 22 lbs. (beagle) the vet forgot to inform me, and it's not listed on the bottle. thank you. A: I suggest you contact your veterinarian to get the directions.
Shakes headQ: Hi, my 3 yrd old rottie/pit mix has started shaking her head as if her ear is bothering her. it is not red or inflammed nor does it have any odor. it is a bit dirty but no more than the ther ear. taking her to the vet is such an ordeal as she does not play well with other dogs..haha can i try to treat it at home first with something safe? she has never had an ear problem or infectin previously. thanks A: It is likely underlying inhalent seasonal allergy. you could try oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily in addition to 1800petmeds ear clear as well. however if persists will likely need prescription topical meds from your vet, also check out article i wrote on this website on ear care.
