Ringworm treatment.Q: My vet diagnosed my rat terrier with ringworm over his entire body. i bought this dog from a suppossed breeder and can tell that he has been in a kennel, on wire his entire life. he is outside on grass now away from my other dogs. i want to use the lymdip combined with an oral medication. what is the name of the oral med. that he has to have? how infectious is ringworm? i also would like to have you comment on some of the old wives tales that i have heard concerning ringworm, such as, "the sun will make ringworm go away". i want to use this dog as a breeder. any help? thanks. A: Never heard of wives tails you ask. also oral drug is either newer preferred one known as itraconazole which is safer and more effective than older drug known as griseofulvin which has more side effects. ringworm is of course infectious and how would depend upon susceptiblity of person or other pet. for example i have never had lesion on my skin even though have been exposed to it many times while others are very sensitive

Bark collarQ: I have a female dog, pom/small collie mix, weighs about 30#, 5 years old, habitual barker. what is your opinion about citranela collars? shock collars? and what about clipping vocal cords? thank you very much leslie koontz A: I don't believe ethically in clipping vocal cords. others are worth a try.
Frontline plus allergy - dogQ: I have a 1 year old white german shepherd dog. i have been applying frontline plus since she was old enough to use it. in the last 3 months, every time i apply it, she paces and acts crazy for almost 2 days. she moves from room to room as if something is chasing her, tries to hide under our legs for protection, and when she lies down she can't stay still for more than 30 seconds. i'm worried that she's senstive to the frontline plus - especially the neurotoxicity. she loves the water and i want to know if i should be worried. are other waterproof options? thank you, ~becky A: Some pets can indeed develop hypersenstiivities to any of the topical flea/tick products with continual use over time even though nothing seen originally. i would try other alternative such as oral program if fleas an issue and natural tick prevention such as cloud 9 by company called halo.

Sore spotQ: I am jsut trying to figure out why my dog is smelling soo bad! we found a small spot on his shoulder that looks like his hair folicils are irritated and oozing... i am not sure what it is from or if this is causing his bad smell. he is acting normal he is just smells real bad even after his bath. A: Could be overgrowth of yeast or bacteria on skin. consider chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days which treats both. if no help see your vet

Clavamox/generticQ: When you look up clavamox on the website it shows amoxicillin as the generic. if my dog is being treated with clavamox for the rest of her life can i change to amoxicillin? who can afford clavamox! help me with alternatives please. i have already cut her 375mg dose in half because i can't afford the cost. A: Clavamox is amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. this is an augmented amoxicillin. changing to amoxicillin is changing to a different medication.
HemotomaQ: I'm pretty sure my dog has a hemotoma, which is swollen area at the tip of her ear. i don't have much money, is there a home remedy? or do you recomend possibly draining it myself? and what causes hemotoma's, so i know what to avoid. A: Hematomas caused by trauma from head shaking or scratching and rupture of one of small blood vessels in ear. not health threatening but very annoying and will get bigger in most cases without surgical drainage by vet. nothing you can do at home. dont attempt to drain yourself
