Frontline plus allergy - dog
Q: I have a 1 year old white german shepherd dog. i have been applying frontline plus since she was old enough to use it. in the last 3 months, every time i apply it, she paces and acts crazy for almost 2 days. she moves from room to room as if something is chasing her, tries to hide under our legs for protection, and when she lies down she can't stay still for more than 30 seconds. i'm worried that she's senstive to the frontline plus - especially the neurotoxicity. she loves the water and i want to know if i should be worried. are other waterproof options? thank you, ~becky
A: Some pets can indeed develop hypersenstiivities to any of the topical flea/tick products with continual use over time even though nothing seen originally. i would try other alternative such as oral program if fleas an issue and natural tick prevention such as cloud 9 by company called halo.
Shop for: tick, frontline plus, frontline

Tear stain
Q: I have a english bulldog and i have tried numerous products to alleviate the tear stains. he has had the surgery for his eyelids, but, his tears still run into his wrinkles. every am i use baby wipes and a special anibiotic shampoo, but , it doesn't get rid of the tear stains very well. just a little. please advise of a product that is effective.
A: You should try tear clear (sku 1022).

Red tailed boa constrictor
Q: I have a red tailed boa constrictor who seems to have an abcess on his behind, can u suggest an antibiodic of some sort to help this problem?
A: You can try gentacin topical spray to area but internally i like baytril which i usually inject once daily in these guys

8 yr old boxer - moist/diarhea and bloody stool
Q: Couple of weeks ago my 8-yr old male white boxer was treated for bloody stool. his stool was analyzed and came out negative. he was on medication for 7 days to treat his diarhhea. yesterday, he pooped and vomitted in his crate and when i took him out to do his bathroom, he has again blood in his stool. he's not sluggish, still eats, and drinks a lot of water. his diet consist of 1 cup of kibbles, 1/4 can food (natural choice), chicken meat, 1/2 cup ground carrots & broccoli, 1 cup rice. it's only recently that i started mixing in his food carrots and broccoli as i was told by other people that it's good for dogs. for his breakfast yesterday before he pooped in his crate, i gave him the same foods + treat (1 large mild bone). i'm also giving him msm for his arthritis. he's an adopted dog and not knowing his full health history, his stool is always moist. please help me understand what's wrong with him and what's the proper way of feeding him and with what? i love him dearly... thank you. nancy
A: I find best diets are proper home made diets as described in book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn, dvm. some good natural diet alternatives are california natural lamb and rice by natura as well as wellness fish and potato which are good low allergy diet in such cases. boxers are indeed prone to colitis, inflammation of colon and he might need prescription meds like flagyl or sulfasalazine to control so really need vet visit. in meantime you could try slippery elm from health food store to soothe his bowels

Should i use once a month
Q: I have 3 indoor cats and 1 dog that only goes outside to potty. i have never had a problem with fleas or ticks and i use frontline plus on all my animals. i am hearing that i only have to use frontline every three months. my question is do you think i could get away with every three months or maybe every 45 days? if so are there any health risk? thank you.
A: Depends on where you live and how bad your flea problem is. i live in south florida and use the frontline plus monthly.
Shop for: frontline, frontline plus, tick

Ear infection
Q: My dog will not let me put drops in his ear . is there an oral med available for ear infections.
A: Sometimes oral meds can help but best to treat topically to get ideal drug levels at site of infection. ask your vet about an ear flush which sometimes helps
