Vomiting
Q: Our 8 year old dog, gretchen, has been vomiting on and off for over 24 hrs now. she is a mixed breed (dachshund and terrier). she usually eats on schedule, daily about 5 pm. she's never had any digestive problems before. i have not changed her dog food. during the last 24+ hours she has been vomiting on and off every hour or so. her stool seemed normal enough earlier today. she has drank a little water but will not eat. she doesn't seem herself. she head is down, ears and tail down. she seems very tired and listless. she didn't even bark at the squirrels today. definitely not her usual perky self. is it possible that she has contracted a bad stomach virus from my 11-year old daughter who was sick earlier this week? i know it sounds crazy, but gretchen is never sick. if this is so, is there anything i can do for her at home until i can get her to the vet. her only visits to the vet have been for annual shots and checkups because she has never been sick. our family vet is out of town for the weekend. he doesn't have an answering service.
A: Remotely possible that viruses can be transmitted between people and pets but hard to prove/disprove. until you get her to vet best to take off all food, only offer small amounts of fluids or electrolytes like pediolyte and can try natural remedy slippery elm which can sometimes help soothe stomach.

Ticks
Q: I have been using advantage and do not have a flea problem, thank god, but i have been finding ticks on my dog. i am at a loss as to the best product to use to kill ticks. i thought advantage did this, but i guess not. also, what is the best way to remove a tick? thanks
A: The k9 advantix kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.|when is tick is found embedded in the skin, use a fine pointed tweezers at the point of attachment, and grasp firmly. remember to wear latex gloves when doing this. |using slow, steady, and firm traction, pull the tick straight out from the skin. |cleanse the skin with mild soap and water. |if part of the tick breaks off, you can try to remove it as you would a splinter, but it is probably best to leave it alone. the body will 'eject' it in time. |place the tick in a jar of alcohol, noting the date, in case of future illness. tick identification and location of tick infestation will be important. ||tips: |do not use a match or caustic materials to try to smother the tick or get the tick to 'back out'. this doesn't work, and may be causing the tick to regurgitate more saliva (and potential pathogens) into the skin. |
Shop for: tick, advantage, advantix

Ear problem
Q: My dogs ear on one side is pinkish in color and she scratches quit often. do you think she has an ear infection?
A: It may be one or it could be sign of an allergy. your vet should do thorough exam of ear to differentiate this

Riding in car
Q: Lola is an adopted dog from animal rescue. she is about 5 years old and a mixed terrier. she is absolutely wonderful except for one problem. when you tell her she's going "bye bye" in the car, she gets so excited. yet, before we get out of the parking lot, she is crying and carrying on terribly. we have tried putting her in a crate and feeding her treats until we get to our destination (which is never more than 20 minutes away, usually to visit her grandfather). we have tried to hold her up front but she scratches us and cries and jumps all over the place. i see other dogs with their heads out the window loving riding in a car but she is horrible. the only part that is strange is that on the ride home, she is like a little angel, sitting in my arms in the passenger seat wrapped in a blanket like a baby. she only starts to act up when we get to the intersection near our home. can you offer some suggestions for lola as we would love to take her with us but it's a terrible experience for all of us. thank you very much.
A: There is a product called vita treat pet calm tablets that can be used in situations such as this.

Ear infections
Q: My dog is about 8 year old golden retriever. i adopted her about 6 months ago. during the summer months she suffers from allergies. she seems to be doing better than past years according to vet records. she has developed an ear infection. i am cleaning out her ear with medication given to me by her foster owner. what antibiotics do you recommend for this type of infection. also once on antibiotics best treatment for preventing yeast infections in dogs.
A: Good to use 1800petmeds ear cleaning solution as preventative. try otomax as best allaround antibiotic for current issue
Shop for: 1800petmeds, ear clean

Ear infection dog
Q: Can i use clavamox or cepohalin?
A: You can use either but best to treat topically with prescription medicine like otomax. dose of both for skin/ear issue is 10 mg per pound twice daily

Baytril 68mg
Q: My dog, westie) has high enzymes in her liver and she has been on baytril 68 mg for one year -- if we stop she throws up and her appetite is less. the vet said she will always have to take this as she is 16 years old and also a diabetic and this keeps her from getting urinary/etc infections. we are currently paying $2.60 a pill a day. do you have this. otherwise, she seems to be fine and is much better since we found out she is a diabetic one month ago, thanks. appreciate a reply.
A: I believe we do have it but is by prescription which you will need from your vet to purchase

Medication
Q: What effect would the antibotic called dicural at 45 mg have on nursing 7 week old puppies?
A: According to the manufacturer's website, the product should not be used during an animal's rapid-growth period, and dogs are particularly susceptible.
