Flea bits causing iching and bitingQ: I have two dogs; one is a 95 lb. irish wolfhound mix, the other being a 55 lb. sharpai mix. i used frontline for their fleas but since the only way the fleas will die according to you people is that the flea has to bite the dog then the dog is left to suffer. i have cleaned my rug, vacumed my furniture and change their bedding often. my problem is the dogs are going crazy with the flea bites. they are licking, scratching, and biting themselves really bad. i read where benedryl will help and if so how much should i give the dogs? also is there any itch reliever that is used by humans that the dogs can also use? A: You can use benadryl(generic-diphenhydramine) 1mg per pound of body weight two to three times daily.

Ear problemQ: My dogs ear on one side is pinkish in color and she scratches quit often. do you think she has an ear infection? A: It may be one or it could be sign of an allergy. your vet should do thorough exam of ear to differentiate this
Frontline plusQ: I have a inside pomarian. he is full grown and weighs 4 pounds. my vet put him on frontline top spot, but i feel since he is a inside dog that the frontline plus would be better. my vet does not carry frontline plus. do they have that in his size. i see it for my bigger dog. A: If you dog is an inside dog he doesn't need the frontline plus. at his weight you cannot use it on him. the topspot should be fine.

RabiesQ: My sister had to have a dog put down yesterday who we loved very much. he was an inside/outside dog. we got him from a shelter about 6 monthes ago. he recieved his rabies vaccine at that time. yesterday she noticed he was acting strange and had 2 puncture marks on him. she took him to the vet and his blood work showed that he had rabies. they put him down. how could an animal that had had a rabies vaccine have wound up with rabies? how effective are the vaccines? this is very difficult for all of us. we thought he was protected! thank you. A: I dont know how they told with a blood test that the dog had rabies. only way to diagnose rabies is by examining brain tissue under microscope. sounds like iffy diagnosis to me
TicksQ: I have been using advantage and do not have a flea problem, thank god, but i have been finding ticks on my dog. i am at a loss as to the best product to use to kill ticks. i thought advantage did this, but i guess not. also, what is the best way to remove a tick? thanks A: The k9 advantix kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.|when is tick is found embedded in the skin, use a fine pointed tweezers at the point of attachment, and grasp firmly. remember to wear latex gloves when doing this. |using slow, steady, and firm traction, pull the tick straight out from the skin. |cleanse the skin with mild soap and water. |if part of the tick breaks off, you can try to remove it as you would a splinter, but it is probably best to leave it alone. the body will 'eject' it in time. |place the tick in a jar of alcohol, noting the date, in case of future illness. tick identification and location of tick infestation will be important. ||tips: |do not use a match or caustic materials to try to smother the tick or get the tick to 'back out'. this doesn't work, and may be causing the tick to regurgitate more saliva (and potential pathogens) into the skin. |
