Ear infection
Q: My dog will not let me put drops in his ear . is there an oral med available for ear infections.
A: Sometimes oral meds can help but best to treat topically to get ideal drug levels at site of infection. ask your vet about an ear flush which sometimes helps

Using ivermectin
Q: My ? is using ivermectin? i know it is a cattle thing but a vet in louisiana said that it could be used on smaller animals at 1cc per 10 lbs. every 6 months just like the tablet or shot the vet. gives. you use a syringe with the needle to fill but remove the needle and squirt it in their mouth. i bought a bottle of 50ml. i have 2 dogs, one weights 65 lbs and the other is 28 lbs. the proheart 6 cost a lot compared to ivermectin. please advise your feelings about this medication.
A: As we have stated in the past, we cannot recommend using a product in any manner not listed on the packaging for that product.

Shoulder dislocation
Q: My dog dislocated her shoulder, and the emergency vet gave me a pain killer called zubrin, can i also give her a asprin along with that for pain?
A: No, the zubrin is used for both pain and inflammation.
Shop for: zubrin

Blastomycosis
Q: Our dog, nelly, was just diagnosed with blasto a week ago. her x-ray showed that she had early signs of pnomonia. she was given spornax for treatment. reading one of the questions, kentraconazole was the medication of choice for a dog with an eye condition associated with blastomycosis. would kentraconazole be suitable for our dog? thank you terri nelson and nelly
A: Sporonox is a newer and usually better drug with less side effects than ketaconazole

Tear stain
Q: I have a english bulldog and i have tried numerous products to alleviate the tear stains. he has had the surgery for his eyelids, but, his tears still run into his wrinkles. every am i use baby wipes and a special anibiotic shampoo, but , it doesn't get rid of the tear stains very well. just a little. please advise of a product that is effective.
A: You should try tear clear (sku 1022).

Doxycycline
Q: My do has been tested positive for lyme. our vet has told us the dosage he needs. we have extra doxycycline for humans at home. are we able to give it to our dog/is it the same kind of doxycycline?
A: While the medication is the same, i cannot tell you from the information you're giving me whether the strength is correct or not.

Need informastion on side effects
Q: Hello i have a 8 year old boxer she has been treated for arthritus in her joints.my question is what kind of side effects do i have to be concerned with she is on dermamaxx 100mx,and what is best help that i can do for her to help her be more comfortable.i also give her gluco 2 any advice would be great.
A: I like to add antioxidant nutrients like vitamin e at 400iu daily as well as vitamin c in form of ester c at 1000 mg twice daily. i also like bioflavenoid supplements like proanthocyanidins at dose of 1 mg per pound twice daily in addition to glucosamine like you are doing. even so some dogs need drugs like deramaxx; just have liver/kidneys monitored periodically as well as watching appetite and any intestinal side effects which are less common with this drug
Shop for: vitamin, deramaxx

Rabies
Q: My sister had to have a dog put down yesterday who we loved very much. he was an inside/outside dog. we got him from a shelter about 6 monthes ago. he recieved his rabies vaccine at that time. yesterday she noticed he was acting strange and had 2 puncture marks on him. she took him to the vet and his blood work showed that he had rabies. they put him down. how could an animal that had had a rabies vaccine have wound up with rabies? how effective are the vaccines? this is very difficult for all of us. we thought he was protected! thank you.
A: I dont know how they told with a blood test that the dog had rabies. only way to diagnose rabies is by examining brain tissue under microscope. sounds like iffy diagnosis to me
