Ichy skin/hair lossQ: My dog has been scratching his skin so bad that he has like no hair in either sides of his stomach, his feet and his nose. his hair loss is driving us all up the wall and i'm sure he don't like it either. what do i do, he looks like he is so much pain. thanks A: I would take to vet for itchy skin workup to include skin scrape of skin, and exam for skin parasites, etc. if negative like allergies either to something in diet or inhalent allergies. in meantime you could try oral benadryl at 1 mg per pound twice daily
How do you know if your dog has worms?Q: Hello. i have a 10 yr old chow mixed with lab and all she does is eat. when someone is eating she will bother the person while they eat. when my 1 yr old cousin is eating she will eat the crumbs off the floor that he drops and sometimes take his food when he walks around with a cookie in his hand. i had a 12 yr old cousin that was always feeding my dog table food and things from the fridge. i had to break my dog from eating table food and stop my cousin from feeding my dog things from the fridge. my dog has always had good health so i was wondering if my dog has worms or just not broken from what my cousin used to feed her. thanks. A: Always worth while to have stool checked for worms but it does sound more behavioral to me.consider working with good trainer in your home
Medicine protocol for older dogsQ: We have a 16 1/2 year old bischon who has had addison's diease since she was 1 year old. she has a #3 heart murmer and suffers from urinary infections all the time. clavamox works initially and then when she is off of it for a few days it comes back.tried 125mg only at night and she started getting nausas from it so we took her off of it. right know we are in limbo getting her stomach better. can you recommend something else we could do. we have her tested and the infection is e-coli every time. at this age the fewer tests we do the better she will be. thank you very much we appreciate your recomendations. she weighs about 18 pounds and eats ivd hifactor. could a different food help? A: You could try low dose baytril in evening which i find causes less upset stomachs then clavamox which fairly commonly causes digestive upset in pets. also try extra vitamin c in her food in form of ester c at dose of 250 mg twice daily; you can also supplement her with cranberry tablets which can help with urinary tract infections
Shop for: vitamin
Ear infection dogQ: Can i use clavamox or cepohalin? A: You can use either but best to treat topically with prescription medicine like otomax. dose of both for skin/ear issue is 10 mg per pound twice daily
Dog, runny noseQ: I have 2 older dogs & their nose runs all the time. what could cause this? thanks A: Could be allergies or occasionaly infections. vet can distinguish

A: Very rare but always a possiblity with any anesthesia in any species
