Dog, runny nose
Q: I have 2 older dogs & their nose runs all the time. what could cause this? thanks
A: Could be allergies or occasionaly infections. vet can distinguish

Bee sting
Q: My 20 pound, 1 year-old dog was stung on the foot by a bee; shortly afterwards, he had diarrhea and vomiting, but seems to be himself. his foot doesn't seem swolen, he hasn't developed any rashes, and is not experiencing any trouble breathing. i may give him benadryl as a precaution. do you think he'll pull through?
A: I think benadryl is fine at dose of one children's 12.5 mg tablet up to twice daily as needed

Ticks
Q: I have been using advantage and do not have a flea problem, thank god, but i have been finding ticks on my dog. i am at a loss as to the best product to use to kill ticks. i thought advantage did this, but i guess not. also, what is the best way to remove a tick? thanks
A: The k9 advantix kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.|when is tick is found embedded in the skin, use a fine pointed tweezers at the point of attachment, and grasp firmly. remember to wear latex gloves when doing this. |using slow, steady, and firm traction, pull the tick straight out from the skin. |cleanse the skin with mild soap and water. |if part of the tick breaks off, you can try to remove it as you would a splinter, but it is probably best to leave it alone. the body will 'eject' it in time. |place the tick in a jar of alcohol, noting the date, in case of future illness. tick identification and location of tick infestation will be important. ||tips: |do not use a match or caustic materials to try to smother the tick or get the tick to 'back out'. this doesn't work, and may be causing the tick to regurgitate more saliva (and potential pathogens) into the skin. |

My dog bites of hair
Q: I have a 5year old pitbull and he bites at his side, rear and tail and he loses hair at all the sites listed.
A: More than likely allergy based. check for fleas or flea dirt with flea comb as well as possiblity inhalent seasonal allergies or food allergies. can try oral benadry at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily. if no change see your vet for stronger meds

Ringworm treatment.
Q: My vet diagnosed my rat terrier with ringworm over his entire body. i bought this dog from a suppossed breeder and can tell that he has been in a kennel, on wire his entire life. he is outside on grass now away from my other dogs. i want to use the lymdip combined with an oral medication. what is the name of the oral med. that he has to have? how infectious is ringworm? i also would like to have you comment on some of the old wives tales that i have heard concerning ringworm, such as, "the sun will make ringworm go away". i want to use this dog as a breeder. any help? thanks.
A: Never heard of wives tails you ask. also oral drug is either newer preferred one known as itraconazole which is safer and more effective than older drug known as griseofulvin which has more side effects. ringworm is of course infectious and how would depend upon susceptiblity of person or other pet. for example i have never had lesion on my skin even though have been exposed to it many times while others are very sensitive

Flea bits causing iching and biting
Q: I have two dogs; one is a 95 lb. irish wolfhound mix, the other being a 55 lb. sharpai mix. i used frontline for their fleas but since the only way the fleas will die according to you people is that the flea has to bite the dog then the dog is left to suffer. i have cleaned my rug, vacumed my furniture and change their bedding often. my problem is the dogs are going crazy with the flea bites. they are licking, scratching, and biting themselves really bad. i read where benedryl will help and if so how much should i give the dogs? also is there any itch reliever that is used by humans that the dogs can also use?
A: You can use benadryl(generic-diphenhydramine) 1mg per pound of body weight two to three times daily.

Blastomycosis
Q: Our dog, nelly, was just diagnosed with blasto a week ago. her x-ray showed that she had early signs of pnomonia. she was given spornax for treatment. reading one of the questions, kentraconazole was the medication of choice for a dog with an eye condition associated with blastomycosis. would kentraconazole be suitable for our dog? thank you terri nelson and nelly
A: Sporonox is a newer and usually better drug with less side effects than ketaconazole

Doxycycline
Q: My do has been tested positive for lyme. our vet has told us the dosage he needs. we have extra doxycycline for humans at home. are we able to give it to our dog/is it the same kind of doxycycline?
A: While the medication is the same, i cannot tell you from the information you're giving me whether the strength is correct or not.
