Frontline plus allergy - dog
Q: I have a 1 year old white german shepherd dog. i have been applying frontline plus since she was old enough to use it. in the last 3 months, every time i apply it, she paces and acts crazy for almost 2 days. she moves from room to room as if something is chasing her, tries to hide under our legs for protection, and when she lies down she can't stay still for more than 30 seconds. i'm worried that she's senstive to the frontline plus - especially the neurotoxicity. she loves the water and i want to know if i should be worried. are other waterproof options? thank you, ~becky
A: Some pets can indeed develop hypersenstiivities to any of the topical flea/tick products with continual use over time even though nothing seen originally. i would try other alternative such as oral program if fleas an issue and natural tick prevention such as cloud 9 by company called halo.
Shop for: tick, frontline plus, frontline

Dogs
Q: I have a mixed lab who insists on licking the top of her paw until it is raw, my vet gave me a spray that is suppose to be bitter, but it's not working she has been doing this for six months please help!
A: Need to treat internally. likely allergy or nervous habit. ask vet for oral script for amitryptylline which often helps these

Ringworm treatment.
Q: My vet diagnosed my rat terrier with ringworm over his entire body. i bought this dog from a suppossed breeder and can tell that he has been in a kennel, on wire his entire life. he is outside on grass now away from my other dogs. i want to use the lymdip combined with an oral medication. what is the name of the oral med. that he has to have? how infectious is ringworm? i also would like to have you comment on some of the old wives tales that i have heard concerning ringworm, such as, "the sun will make ringworm go away". i want to use this dog as a breeder. any help? thanks.
A: Never heard of wives tails you ask. also oral drug is either newer preferred one known as itraconazole which is safer and more effective than older drug known as griseofulvin which has more side effects. ringworm is of course infectious and how would depend upon susceptiblity of person or other pet. for example i have never had lesion on my skin even though have been exposed to it many times while others are very sensitive
Shop for: ringworm

Ear infections
Q: My dog is about 8 year old golden retriever. i adopted her about 6 months ago. during the summer months she suffers from allergies. she seems to be doing better than past years according to vet records. she has developed an ear infection. i am cleaning out her ear with medication given to me by her foster owner. what antibiotics do you recommend for this type of infection. also once on antibiotics best treatment for preventing yeast infections in dogs.
A: Good to use 1800petmeds ear cleaning solution as preventative. try otomax as best allaround antibiotic for current issue
Shop for: 1800petmeds, ear clean

Mammory tumor
Q: My basset hound has a large softball size mammory tumor. the local vet examined her and reported that she has several but this is the only one that is showing. she quoted a price of $1300.00 to remove all the tumors but reports that most dogs have a 10% recovery rate. i was curious if it is common to just remove the one tumor? and what the general cost would be? the dog is very high spirited even though she is luging around this tumor. i hate to have to have her put down when her quality of life is still very good even though this one tumor is causing some discomfort when walking. she is active, playful and eats regularly. please let me know your suggestions.
A: Try a second opinion about costs. sounds kind of high to me. also most of time vets remove all of the tumors as often if only remove one, others left can rapidly grow after surgery
